Coco Cordero to WBC

SURPRISE, Ariz. (Associated Press) -- Texas “Kick Butt” Rangers closer Francisco “Coco” Cordero will be pitching for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic after all.

Cordero had been on the original Dominican roster, but he bowed out three weeks ago because of a sore pitching shoulder. A roster spot on the team opened when reliever Damaso Marte injured his shoulder and Cordero was asked to join as a replacement.

"It was a really tough decision because I really wanted to pitch, but I wanted to give them enough to get someone else," said Cordero, who will leave Rangers training camp on Friday. "I've been working hard right along and I've been feeling better every day. I think I will be able to give them one inning. Around 30 pitches would be my best."

The Dominican Republic became the first team to reach the WBC semifinals Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Venezuela. The Dominicans will face Cuba, a 4-3 winner over Puerto Rico.
