Beavan vs Stockton

High-A: at Bakersfield 7, Stockton 4
Win: Beavan (4-4, 4.70)
Save: Flores (1, 3.13)

Blake Beavan just missed his fifth consecutive quality start in an outing longer on perseverance than dominance. Beavan allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, three walks and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings. As I'd mentioned a few weeks ago, his rates of homers, walks, and strikeouts in Bakersfield aren't substantially different from last year in Clinton when he posted a 2.37 ERA. The major difference in his hit rate on balls in play, from .255 last year to .310 in '09.

The amazing Blaze pen - in the form of Ryan Falcon (1.2 IP) and Adelberto Flores (1 IP, 3 SO) - held the Ports scoreless while the Blaze tacked on two insurance runs. 2B Matt Lawson was 2-4 with a walk, and Mauro Gomez drove in four on a single and double. Catcher Elio Sarmiento and SS Davis Stoneburner also had two hits.

In the 7th, Stockton's radio announcer mentioned that impending rain could be problematic because Bakersfield doesn't own a tarp.
