Blackhawks turn to Turco
Stanley Cup champions walk away from Niemi arbitration decision, sign former Stars goalie
For Marty Turco, the bottom line is to play for a Stanley Cup contender.
By agreeing to a one-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, the veteran goaltender made that clear.
Turco, who will replace Stanley Cup hero Antti Niemi as the Blackhawks' top goalie, could have earned more money and gotten a longer contract elsewhere, according to his agent, Kurt Overhardt. The deal is worth $1.3 million.
"We spoke to four different teams and turned down different opportunities and amounts," Overhardt said. "He turned down teams with higher considerations and longer terms ...
"Marty's priority was joining as team that could win a Stanley Cup, and he chose Chicago."
Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said the team expects "immediate" contributions from the 34-year-old Turco, who has played all nine of his NHL seasons with Dallas. The three-time All Star has never advanced past the conference finals in six playoff appearances with the Stars.
"Part of the reason for going there (Chicago) is now you're on a team that has a chance to win every night and won a Stanley Cup last season," Turco said.
The 26-year-old Niemi helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup this past season after earning $826,875 as a rookie. He was awarded a $2.75 million salary for next season by an arbitrator last week, putting the Blackhawks in a tough spot.
Bowman declined to say whether the team could have squeezed Niemi's award under the NHL's salary cap, set at $59.4 million next season.
"The salary cap has been talked about too much," Bowman said.
However, Bowman said he made several attempts to sign Niemi to a multiyear contract before the goalie's case went to arbitration.
"We exhausted all of our options to make this work," Bowman said. "This is the direction that made the most sense. You have to have flexibility within your roster and this was the best way to defend the Cup."
Niemi, a Finn who signed with the Blackhawks in May 2008, becomes an unrestricted free agent. He played all but one period of the Blackhawks postseason run to the championship, going 16-6 with a 2.63 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and two shutouts.
Niemi is the eighth player to leave the Blackhawks since the team won its first Stanley Cup in 49 years, joining Andrew Ladd, Ben Eager, Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Adam Burish, Colin Fraser and Kris Versteeg. John Madden, a 37-year-old unrestricted free agent, has yet to sign with a team.
Niemi's agent, Bill Zito, said his client was disappointed by the Blackhawks' decision.
"Just imagine how anyone would feel in his situation," Zito said. "His situation is exacerbated a little bit more than those guys the Blackhawks traded away because of going through all the drama of the arbitration.
"You're 26 years old, just had your breakout year and win the Cup," Zito added. "It's all cap management. I have to respect the hockey decision they made and live with it."
Zito said he was talking to several NHL teams and expects Niemi to land with a new club before the start of the season.
Bowman said he had been eyeing Turco for some time and trying to coordinate the timing of the signing so another NHL team wouldn't take him.
"We talked it over and Marty is the guy we certainly had interest in for a long time here," Bowman said via conference call. "We're fortunate that he had some patience with us, which speaks to the kind of guy he is and that he wants to be here. We've been working on parallel paths for a while."
In his NHL career, Turco is 262-154-63 in 509 regular-season games with a 2.31 goals-against average and 40 shutouts. Last season, he went 22-20-11 with a 2.72 GAA, .913 save percentage and four shutouts.
The 5-foot-11 native of Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario, who turns 35 this month, is 21-26 with a 2.17 goals-against average in 47 playoffs games.
The Stars, however, have missed the postseason for two straight years.
"I haven't lost my confidence, although the last few years have been tough mentally because we haven't made the playoffs," Turco said. He said he has "never been better physically" and that it was a "dream come true" to play for an Original Six NHL team that once had Tony Esposito, another Sault Ste-Marie native, in net.
"I had offers from other teams and multiyear deals, but I had a chance to be a part of this great organization," Turco said. "Waiting, especially looking at it from today, doesn't seem that difficult."
With the addition of Turco, Bowman said his team's roster is nearly set for 2010-11.
"We need to add a defenseman, but we're not going to be making wholesale changes at this point," he said. "We're satisfied with what we have."

Playoff Game #1: Blackhawks at Red Wings
I am not going to say that the logo is bad, but the Blackhawk logo could be better. The Red Wings were seeded second and the Blackhawks were seeded fourth coming into the playoffs. Both teams amassed over 100 points in the NHL point system. The Red Wings limped into the playoffs while Chicago steamrolled on in. Who is the better team?Chicago has played six games in the first two rounds (12 games in all), while Detroit swept in the first and went seven in the second (11 games in all).
Detroit won all four games in the second round at home. They are undefeated at home in the Playoffs.
Chicago is 2-4 on the road during the playoffs. Chicago has won it's last three playoff games. Detroit has won three of their last four.
Forecast: I don't know. I like Chicago for the series. I'm really not at all sure why, but I do. Maybe it is because my wife is from Illinois (and I am secretly biased, so secret that I don't even know about it). Either way, if Chicago does win the series, they have to take one on the road from a Detroit team who hasn't lost at home since the playoffs started. Detroit wins this one tonight with a tight score of 4-3.

Game 18: Stars vs. Blackhawks
Maybe I am wrong for this, but I do not like the Blackhawks logo. It just looks weird to me. The Stars ended a three game losing streak by beating the Phoenix Coyotes. New trend? No, just good old fashioned luck. You can't lose them all, I guess. I have heard of teachers who give 100s on tests if the student gets them all wrong if every question is answered. The odds of getting a zero in that situation is even lower than getting them all correct. And maybe that is how the Stars grabbed a win against the Coyotes... sounds good, anyway.Chicago is 7-4-5 (or 7-9, if you adjust things to the Johnny Ray method) and the Stars are 6-8-3 (or 6-11). Chicago is the better team, statistically speaking, and probably outright. On the point scale, Chicago ranks sixth in the Western Conference, while the Stars rank second to last (14th). I used to think that Dallas is underrated, but it is starting to grow on me a little bit that they really are this bad.
Marty Turco's 3.58 GAA is almost the worst in the NHL. Both Chicago goalies rank much higher. You have Nikolai Khabibulin ranks twelfth with a 2.38 GAA and Cristobal Huet has a 2.95 GAA. I would be willing to put in my mother as a goalie over Turco right now. He just doesn't have what it takes to get the "W" (Not George "W", but "W" as in Win. He probably has what it takes to get a George W.).
Patrick Kane is in the top 10 in points with 21. Mike Ribeiro has 18 points for the Stars.
Forecast: The Stars do not have the offense or the defense to compete with Chicago, which is hands down the reason the Blackhawks take this one 4-2.Labels: Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars

Pre-Season Game 6: Stars vs. Blackhawks
There is a lot of stuff going on in the sports world... MLB Playoffs, Pre-season for the Stars and the Mavericks pre-season is just around the corner, and then we have the NFL. This is still a pre-season game. It doesn't count. The Stars lost to the Blackhawks earlier this pre-season. This game is going to be played in Dallas. The Stars lost by one in Chicago, 4-3... I would like to think that the Stars can return the favor as they gear up for the regular season. Chicago is 3-1-1 this pre-season, but has been outscored 15-19... so they lose big and win close. In four pre-season games, the Stars are 1-3 with 11-14 scored to opponent score ratio. What does this mean? Stars win close and lose close. For whatever reason, I feel I shouldn't trust those numbers, since I know the Stars have lost by one in three loses and won by two, so the ratio should be just one goal difference and not three. This, of course, doesn't count the game the Stars played against Colorado yesterday, where they lost 3-1.
Forecast: Chicago has the better momentum and the Stars really have none. It would only be obvious to take Chicago in this one until we can see the Stars actually starting to put something together. I still think the Stars are a playoff worthy team, but they just aren't playing like one right now. Again, it is still pre-season. Score: 3-2.Labels: Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars

Picks to Sunday
Friday, November 4th
NBA
Spurs (1-0) vs. Cavaliers (1-0)
Spurs are awesome. The Cavaliers manhandled the Hornets. Spurs are home. Spurs have Duncan, Finley, Nick at Night, and everybody else who can just do right in the world of basketball. So, the story goes… James will not be enough for the Cavaliers to win. Pure and simple, Spurs are going to take this one. Score: 107-101.
NHL
Stars (6-5-1) vs. Blackhawk’s (4-9-0)
Well, Chicago is just stinking up the ice… If it wasn’t for Vorobiev, would they have any wins at all? If the Stars contain him, they walk away with a win easy. If they don’t, well they still win, it just won’t be as easy. The question I am thinking of this early into the season is will they make the playoffs? Too early to tell, but if Chicago takes them out, then the most likely answer would be ‘NO.’ Dallas over Chicago – Score: 5-2.

NBA
Mavs (1-1) vs. Spurs (1-0)
The Mavs had some time off, but will rest be enough for the homecoming of Finley? Man, if only the Mavs had Fin and Nick at Night, I would think we could make a strong run again. Not that 50+ wins is something to be ashamed about, but when you are in the same division as the Spurs, what can you do but just lie down and die. I do think they will come out to play and that this game is going to be close, but I have a reality check telling me the Mavs will start 1-2 this season and the Spurs 3-0. Score: 99-97.
Rockets (1-0) vs. Hornets (1-1)
Ming around the rosés, pocket full of poses, ashes – ashes, we all fall down… And so do the Hornets… but, the relocation experiment may do them well. First in Charlotte. Next in New Orleans, and now shacking up in the OK country. But this is not going to be played at “home,” wherever that may be… it’s in a place that is one place closer to you. Houston will win this one, simply because of home court, and the Hornets have impressed me, but let’s be honest. I’m fickle. The Hornets did beat the Rockets by 1 in pre-season, but that was at their house. In Houston, things are different. Score: 92-89.
NHL
Stars (6-5-1) vs. Avalanche (7-4-1)
Denver… a real beautiful area, but hockey players are not known for their looks, are they. Colorado is 5-2-1 at home, and the Stars are 3-1 on the road. But we hate the Avalanche (professionally, not personally). Sour grapes all around. These two teams are going to beat each other senseless. I will take the Avalanche on this one, simply because of home-ice as they call it (and they have won their last 4 games, all at home). Score: 5-4.

NFL
Panthers (5-2) vs. Buccaneers (5-2)
Are you ready for some football? Me neither. When’s baseball season start again? Cowboys are off… but aren’t they always? Anyway, the mighty-mighty-boss-cats take the stage on Sunday, which will be a great game. Two juggernauts facing off… man, am I using stock lines? Shame on me. Bucs vs. the Cats, should be fun to watch. After a 1-2 start, the Cats have won their last 4, and with the exception of Minnesota, they were close games (4 or less points of victory). They have held opponents under 20 points only twice thus far (New England and Minnesota) and in my opinion, hasn’t really had any victories to truly boast about. I am starting to wonder if the record is more by chance than skill. Tampa Bay on the other hand is a defensive genius. But here is the real concern with them. They were beaten by San Francisco. And right now, that is just outright embarrassment. My 83 year old grandma can beat the 49ers. My six month old can sack their quarterback. The 49ers rank last in 3rd down conversions at 25.9%. In comparison, the Colts, who are a strong favorite to go Supe, have a 51.9%. That’s more than twice as many based on the same chances. I think this may be a close one, the Panthers are better in my mind (they rank second on third downs, behind the Colts). Score: 20-17.
Bears (4-3) vs. Saints (2-6)
Well, I guess I have to look at this one… Saints suck. But let’s look at a few things. Saints have a better offense, statistically, but score less points on average. They have scored over 20 points only twice, and are 1-1 when that happens. They are 0-3 when they score 10 points or less. Green Bay beat them in the embarrass bowl 52-3 on 10/9. Embarrassing the Saints is a common theme this year. I think they should be thinking draft the rest of the way… put defensive linemen who are on crutches into the game and focus off-season. I think Quincy Carter is free right now… Now, the Bears. After starting 1-3, they have won the last 3 and moved into first place in their division. They get less yards than their opponents, but score more points. Do they give them a false sense of security or something? Look for Jones to rush for a million yards (actually, I would say more like 110) and Orton to pass another 200. Bears dominate because Saints don’t show up (again). Score: 21-7.
