Game 141: Rangers vs. Mariners

Nice game last night. McCarthy is finally looking like a worthy pitcher to have been traded for...
Scouting Report:
Mariners: Hernandez found trouble in nearly every inning against the Indians on Friday night. Though Hernandez never recored a 1-2-3 inning, he was still able to leave on top after six innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. Ground-ball double plays got him out of jams in the first two innings before the Indians cracked him for single runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Still, with the Tribe putting its first two runners on base in those particular innings, Hernandez showed enough poise to minimize the damage and keep the Mariners on top throughout his entire outing. In four starts against the Rangers this season, Hernandez is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA. Lifetime, he is 4-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 14 career starts.

Rangers: Nippert is filling in for Vicente Padilla, who is on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Nippert is 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA in two starts after losing to the Angels, 3-1, on Friday. He took a two-hit shutout into the sixth before growing tired and allowing three runs. Opponents are hitting .329 off him, including .357 with runners in scoring position. He allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings in a relief appearance against the Mariners earlier this season.

A note on the post about the Lumberkings, Beavan is actually scheduled for tonight. The 'Kings were off yesterday.

Rangers to Watch:
  • Michael Young: 10-33 (.303 BA); 3 doubles, 1 triple, and 3 RBIs
  • Gerald Laird: 4-13 (.308 BA); 1 RBI

Something of note... Josh Hamilton is 0-10 against Hernandez. The current roster is batting .245 (46-188) with 11 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HRs (Murphy and Kinsler, both out) with 18 RBIs. This could be a good game for the Mariners. Could be.

Notable Mariners:

  • Miguel Cairo: 1-3 with a double
  • Jeremy Reed: 1-3 with a double

The Mariners as a whole are 6-20 (.300 BA) with two doubles and a HR (Beltre) and two RBIs (Beltre, again).

Forecast: I am just going to go off a whim here and say the Rangers in this one, simply because Texas seems to dominate on rubber games (games deciding a three game series). Rangers win this one with some breathing room, 13-8. More balls fly out for a HR due to the unbelievable winds today. Johnny Out.
