How NFL Teams Approach Uncapped Free Agency
By The Associated Press (AP)
How each of the 32 NFL teams are approaching Friday's opening of free agency with no salary cap:
___
AFC
BALTIMORE RAVENS
Ravens don't intend to be thrifty. In quest to enhance roster, especially at wide receiver, Ravens expect to benefit from cost-cutting measures by other teams.
"There will be some real good players that are going to get cut," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "And we've had good success with Derrick Mason, Trevor Pryce, Samari Rolle — guys that got cut because of the salary cap situation that that particular team was in."
BUFFALO BILLS
For all the holes Buddy Nix has to fill on team that missed playoffs for 10th straight season, it's unlikely first-time general manager will be making any T.O.-type splashes, as Bills did last March. When hired in December, Nix cautioned he intends to build through draft and would rather target mid-range free agents. That doesn't mean Bills won't be busy. Buffalo has needs at offensive tackle, receiver and on a defense switching to 3-4 scheme under new coach Chan Gailey.

NFL Playoffs 2009
Really, the Steelers wouldn't be a hard pick when looking at the brackets from the get-go. The Cardinals are a bit of a shocker, with a 9-7 record coming into the Playoffs. I think they have made believers out of some people. The Cardinals are going to be the underdogs in this matchup, which shouldn't come as to a surprise to anyone, especially since the Steelers have the #1 defense.Home Field

NFL Playoffs 2009
Here's my Quick Picks on who will be heading to the Super Bowl:
- Ravens against Steelers: I like the Ravens.
- Eagles against Cardinals: I like the Cardinals.
Birds in the Bowl? Well, there will be at least one team that has a bird logo... 75% of the remaining teams have a bird in their logo. The home team has won 3 of 8 times... with only three more games to play, still, with the Super Bowl considered a neutral location and that they "assign" a home team, should it really count in those standings?
AFC Championship Game
The Ravens are one of two #6 seeds in a Championship this weekend. Could it be a Super Bowl filled with two #6 seeds? And it just scratches my head to see a #4 seed hosting a conference championship. It's just weird, yet intriguing. The Steelers won both meetings this season, the first in overtime and the second by a 13-9 margin on Dec 14th.| Name | QB Rating | Comp-Att | Comp % | Yards | TD-Int | Fumbles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Joe Flacco | 80.3 | 257-428 | 60.0% | 2,971 | 14-12 | 11 |
Ben Roethlisberger | 80.1 | 281-469 | 59.9% | 3,301 | 17-15 | 4 |
| Name | Carries | Yards | TDs | Catches | Yards | TDs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Le'Ron McClain | 232 | 902 | 10 | 19 | 123 | 1 |
Willie Parker | 210 | 791 | 5 | 3 | 13 | 0 |
Parker rushed for 146 yards in one game thus far into the playoffs. If the Ravens are going to win, they do need to stopthe run enough to force a passing game. They have the pass coverage that can grab the well needed turnover.
| Name | Catches | Yards | TDs | Fumbles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Derrick Mason | 80 | 1,037 | 5 | 2 |
Mark Clayton | 41 | 695 | 3 | 0 |
Todd Heap | 35 | 403 | 3 | 1 |
Hines Ward | 81 | 1,043 | 7 | 1 |
Santonio Holmes | 55 | 821 | 5 | 2 |
Nate Washington | 40 | 631 | 3 | 0 |
Hines Ward has 70 yards receiving and Heath Miller has a touchdown and three catches.
| Name | Tackles | Sacks | Ints-TD | Deflections |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Ray Lewis | 117 | 3.5 | 3-0 | 9 |
Ed Reed | 41 | 1.0 | 9-2 | 16 |
Terrell Suggs | 69 | 8.0 | 2-2 | 9 |
James Farrior | 133 | 3.5 | 0-0 | 5 |
James Harrison | 101 | 16.0 | 1-0 | 3 |
Troy Polamalu | 73 | 0.0 | 7-0 | 17 |
Forecast: I don't want to pick the home team for the sake of picking the home team. The Ravens have a good thing going, and so it would be just as easy to pick them over the Steelers as it would be the Steelers over the Ravens. I like the Ravens pass defense. And even though the Ravens have lost twice to the Steelers already this season, the have the better pass defense... and they lost both of those games very closely. And so I pick the Ravens to upset the Steelers with a close game here, as well. Score: 16-13.Sunday, January 04, 2009

Game 13: Cowboys vs. Steelers
This game is going to be a great one. It's in Pittsburgh, who has a 9-3 record. The Cowboys have a 8-4 record and are winning games thanks to QB Tony Romo. I love this game since the teams have a great history against each other. The game will hopefully live up to the history, and most likely will live up to it with the likes of Romo, Ware, and TO against Roethlisberger, Ward, and Harrison. To say that it will be fun, edge of your seat fun, would be an understatement. And now that I have "billed it up", it will now probably be a yawner. Doubt it.- Ben Roethlisberger: QB Rating - 80.0; 208-343 (60.6%) for 2,412 yards, 13 TDs and 12 Ints
- Willie Parker (Questionable): 142 carries for 572 yards with 4 TDs
- Mewelde Moore: 121 carries for 499 yards with 5 TDs
- Hines Ward: 59 catches for 755 yards and 6 TDs
- Santonio Holmes: 41 catches for 594 yards and 3 TDs
- Nate Washington: 27 catches for 446 yards and 3 TDs
- James Harrison: 80 tackles with 14 sacks and an Int
- Troy Polamalu: 54 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 15 deflections
- LaMarr Woodley: 48 tackles, 11.5 sacks and an Int
These guys are for real on defense. They not only come to play, they come to win. And they not only come to win, they come to inflict pain on the QB.
- Tony Romo: QB Rating - 103.2; 192-300 (64.0%) for 2,559 yards, 21 TDs and 8 Ints
- Marion Barber: 215 carries for 870 yards with 7 TDs and 2 lost fumbles
- Terrell Owens: 52 catches for 816 yards with 8 TDs and a lost funble
- Jason Witten: 58 catches for 709 yards and 3 TDs
- Patrick Crayton: 31 catches for 409 yards and 3 TDs
- DeMarcus Ware: 62 tackles with 15 sacks (leads NFL in sacks)
- Jay Ratliff: 37 tackles with 6 sacks
They list DeMarcus Ware day-to-day, but I would totally expect him to play on Sunday. In fact, I would be shocked, dumbfounded, mind you, if he didn't play. For Christmas, it is his jersey on my Christmas list. You could say that I'm a D. Ware fan. BEWARE OF D. WARE!!!
Romo is the better QB between the two. This could go either way, in that it can be a high scoring game for both teams... Pittsburgh has scored over 30 points three times this season and is 3-0 in those games. They have not given up 30 points in a game this season. Pittsburgh has lost to Indianapolis, the Giants, and to Philadelphia. They are 2-2 when they give up 20 or more points, with the most yielded this season being 24 points.
Both teams have won their last three games. Dallas has given up 30 points or more four times this season and is 1-3 in those games. They have scored 30 or more four times, including the last two games, and are 4-0 in those games. The most points the Cowboys have scored this season is 41 points in week #2 against Philadelphia.
When Romo was missing, the Dallas defense got a lot more work to do, as the offense averaged just under 14 points a game for three games.
The Steelers defense have given up only 10 points a game in each of their last three games.
Forecast: I think this is as tough as they get to call. Pittsburgh has the superior defense, while the Cowboys have the superior offense. When both are on the field, it will be a battle of skills. I guess the question is this: Can Dallas get 20+ points against the Steelers, who have lost to two NFC East teams? Simply scoring 20 points automatically gives them a 50% chance of winning. And scoring 30 points gives them a 100% chance of winning in my mind. They won't make it to 30 points, but they will to 20, or to be exact, Dallas scores 27 points on them. And they win it, 27-24. It's a nail biter.

Some News and Thoughts
On a different note, the weekend was a great one. I went to the Rangers Fan Fest and got a ton of autographs, including John Wetland, who just signed with the Nationals. Kameron Loe also signed for us, and loved my son… I already have Orel, who is going to be an ESPN commentator. We got a ton of free stuff: tickets, baseball gloves, posters, and binoculars. Was it worth the five dollars to get in? Most definitely. I will be selling discount tickets to the Rangers soon to benefit the homeless. Links will hopefully be provided by an organization I have been working with over the past few months… more to come on that later. If you are interested, let me know by emailing me at jonathonray201@hotmail.com and include in the subject line: Discount Ranger Tickets along with questions/comments you may have. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY INFORMATION ABOUT PAYMENT MATERIAL – SUCH AS CREDIT CARD NUMBERS, BANK INFORMATION, ETC. I want to protect myself and you. Only send that information through an https website, due to security measures. On a different note, this company will be able to set up other people throughout the US if you are interested in discount tickets for a different team, such as the Braves, White Sox, Astros and Diamondbacks. Again, more information to come within the next few weeks. Johnny Out.
