Tom Hicks to Sell Stars

By CBC Sports

Tom Hicks is on the verge of selling the Dallas Stars and his 50 per cent stake in the American Airlines Center for nearly $300 million US, reports Forbes.

This will allow creditors of Hicks Sports Group to get back close to $200 million, in addition to what they will receive in the sale of the Texas Rangers, according to Forbes.

While there was no mention of a potential buyer, there have been reports that suggest Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who showed interest in purchasing the Pittsburgh Penguins at one point, would at least make an inquiry into buying the Stars.

Blackhawks turn to Turco

The Associated Press

Stanley Cup champions walk away from Niemi arbitration decision, sign former Stars goalie
For Marty Turco, the bottom line is to play for a Stanley Cup contender.

By agreeing to a one-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, the veteran goaltender made that clear.

Turco, who will replace Stanley Cup hero Antti Niemi as the Blackhawks' top goalie, could have earned more money and gotten a longer contract elsewhere, according to his agent, Kurt Overhardt. The deal is worth $1.3 million.

"We spoke to four different teams and turned down different opportunities and amounts," Overhardt said. "He turned down teams with higher considerations and longer terms ...

"Marty's priority was joining as team that could win a Stanley Cup, and he chose Chicago."

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said the team expects "immediate" contributions from the 34-year-old Turco, who has played all nine of his NHL seasons with Dallas. The three-time All Star has never advanced past the conference finals in six playoff appearances with the Stars.

"Part of the reason for going there (Chicago) is now you're on a team that has a chance to win every night and won a Stanley Cup last season," Turco said.

The 26-year-old Niemi helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup this past season after earning $826,875 as a rookie. He was awarded a $2.75 million salary for next season by an arbitrator last week, putting the Blackhawks in a tough spot.

Bowman declined to say whether the team could have squeezed Niemi's award under the NHL's salary cap, set at $59.4 million next season.

"The salary cap has been talked about too much," Bowman said.

However, Bowman said he made several attempts to sign Niemi to a multiyear contract before the goalie's case went to arbitration.

"We exhausted all of our options to make this work," Bowman said. "This is the direction that made the most sense. You have to have flexibility within your roster and this was the best way to defend the Cup."

Niemi, a Finn who signed with the Blackhawks in May 2008, becomes an unrestricted free agent. He played all but one period of the Blackhawks postseason run to the championship, going 16-6 with a 2.63 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and two shutouts.

Niemi is the eighth player to leave the Blackhawks since the team won its first Stanley Cup in 49 years, joining Andrew Ladd, Ben Eager, Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Adam Burish, Colin Fraser and Kris Versteeg. John Madden, a 37-year-old unrestricted free agent, has yet to sign with a team.

Niemi's agent, Bill Zito, said his client was disappointed by the Blackhawks' decision.

"Just imagine how anyone would feel in his situation," Zito said. "His situation is exacerbated a little bit more than those guys the Blackhawks traded away because of going through all the drama of the arbitration.

"You're 26 years old, just had your breakout year and win the Cup," Zito added. "It's all cap management. I have to respect the hockey decision they made and live with it."

Zito said he was talking to several NHL teams and expects Niemi to land with a new club before the start of the season.

Bowman said he had been eyeing Turco for some time and trying to coordinate the timing of the signing so another NHL team wouldn't take him.

"We talked it over and Marty is the guy we certainly had interest in for a long time here," Bowman said via conference call. "We're fortunate that he had some patience with us, which speaks to the kind of guy he is and that he wants to be here. We've been working on parallel paths for a while."

In his NHL career, Turco is 262-154-63 in 509 regular-season games with a 2.31 goals-against average and 40 shutouts. Last season, he went 22-20-11 with a 2.72 GAA, .913 save percentage and four shutouts.

The 5-foot-11 native of Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario, who turns 35 this month, is 21-26 with a 2.17 goals-against average in 47 playoffs games.

The Stars, however, have missed the postseason for two straight years.

"I haven't lost my confidence, although the last few years have been tough mentally because we haven't made the playoffs," Turco said. He said he has "never been better physically" and that it was a "dream come true" to play for an Original Six NHL team that once had Tony Esposito, another Sault Ste-Marie native, in net.

"I had offers from other teams and multiyear deals, but I had a chance to be a part of this great organization," Turco said. "Waiting, especially looking at it from today, doesn't seem that difficult."

With the addition of Turco, Bowman said his team's roster is nearly set for 2010-11.

"We need to add a defenseman, but we're not going to be making wholesale changes at this point," he said. "We're satisfied with what we have."

STARS, BRUNNSTROM AGREE ON ONE-YEAR, $675K CONTRACT

The Dallas Stars have agreed to terms with forward Fabian Brunnstrom on a one-year deal worth $675,000.

The team announced the deal prior to an arbitration hearing that was scheduled for Friday morning. The team had originally tendered a qualifying offer to the forward on June 15.

Brunnstrom, 25, scored two goals and nine assists in 44 games with the Stars last season. He has 19 goals and 21 assists in 99 career games.

The native of Jonstorp, Sweden was originally signed by the Stars in as a free agent in May 2008. On Oct. 15, 2008, Brunnstrom became the third player ever to score a hat trick in his NHL debut in a 6-4 win over Nashville.

Benitez meeting 'constructive' say Liverpool

By Carl Markham, PA

Liverpool claim a meeting between Rafael Benitez, chairman Martin Broughton and managing director Christian Purslow has been "constructive and cordial".

The Spaniard was hoping to be given an idea of what transfer budget is likely to await him in the summer, although it is unlikely Broughton - as a non-executive director - has the authority to give definite assurances.

Benitez was hoping to get a better idea about what the future holds both for the club and himself personally at yesterday's meeting, although unless a buyer is found it seems improbable co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett will invest any more money.

A Liverpool spokesman last night said: "We are pleased that the first of what is intended to be a series of meetings took place today between the chairman, managing Director and the manager. The meeting was constructive and cordial.

"The chairman shared his views about plans for the future of the club. There was an exchange of views on issues of concern to both the board and the manager which were either addressed or to be picked up in forthcoming meetings."

Stars, G Lehtonen Agree on 3-year, $10.65M Deal

(Associated Press) The Dallas Stars and goaltender Kari Lehtonen have agreed to a three-year, $10.65 million contract extension.

The deal announced Tuesday locks up Marty Turco's replacement through the 2012-13 season. General manager Joe Nieuwendyk (NOO'-ehn-dyk) said last month the Stars were moving on without Turco, their top goalie for nine seasons.

Dallas acquired the 26-year-old Lehtonen in February from Atlanta. He was the No. 2 pick in the 2002 draft by the Thrashers.

Lehtonen was 6-4-0 with a 2.81 goals-against average in 12 games with the Stars this season.

Turner Sports Places Virtual Graphics Around Dallas Skyline During NBA All-Star Week

Turner Sports deployed Orad Hi-Tec Systems’ real-time, 3-D graphics solutions to place virtual graphics throughout the Dallas skyline during its four-day NBA All-Star Game coverage in mid-February.

The cable network also used Orad's on-air graphics platform to provide traditional HD graphics as needed throughout the NBA All-Star Week programming.

The Turner Sports production team placed virtual graphics promoting advertisers, sponsors and network programming onto objects around Cowboys Stadium with Orad's 3DPlay. Operating in outdoor billboard signage mode, 3DPlay was deployed for all outdoor virtual enhancements. Using the same software and graphic controller, the team also created real-time, on-air graphics from within one of the on-site outside broadcast OB trucks. The 3-D graphics were used throughout the four days of coverage, and during the 59th Annual NBA All-Star Game watched at home live by more than 6 million fans.

Virtual production took place outdoors nearly 20mi from Dallas atop Rangers Stadium, home of the Texas Rangers MLB team. Due to snow, the virtual show planned for the NBA All-Star Game was nearly cancelled; however, the Orad graphics artist stationed on-site was able to build a snow filter into the graphic design application, which allowed the show to go to air. Virtual clouds were also created and then used to blend the 3-D graphics into the Dallas skyline, appearing so realistic that viewers would never have suspected they weren't real.

Game 80: Stars at Wild

Yeah, it is raining on the Stars. They will not make the playoffs as they are currently seeded 12th in their conference with three games to play. Since this game really has no meaning for the Stars (let's just be honest, OK?), they will more than likely just play their 60 minutes and go home. Minnesota is 37-33-9 (or 37-42, adjusted) and the Stars are 35-34-10 (or 35-44 adjusted). Both teams are still in a hunt for postseason, but the Stars, 12th in the conference, are all but eliminated. The Wild trail 8th place Nashville by three points. The Stars need to win their last three games, and need loses by Nashville, St. Louis, Minnesota, and Edmonton to catch 8th place. Not likely. In fact, the Blues and Predators need to lose their last three games. And it wouldn't hurt for the Oilers and Wild to do the same... again, not likely.

The reality is that both the Wild and Stars are stinking it up. This game tonight will not be defined by the greatness of one team over the other, but by who doesn't stink it up the worst.

Forecast: The Wild doesn't stink it up nearly as bad as the Stars tonight. It is probably due to the Wild playing at home. Stars get officially eliminated from the playoffs with a score of 4-2, Wild.

Brad Richards is out for six to eight weeks with a wrist injury. Brendon Morrow could return in the final week if there is a miracle. He says that it would be more likely to return during the playoffs, if the Stars make the playoffs. They are seeded sixth right now, but play an Oiler team who is seeded eighth currently. Of course, the absense of Richards changes the top four, adding Neal into the picture. Still not a bad group of guys.

This game is the final meeting between the two teams in the regular season. It should be noted that Turco has still been playing good of late. Forecast: The Richards loss is puzzling. The Stars won against Columbus without Richards, but still, you would prefer to have Richards and Morrow on the ice if they were available. The Stars have responded well without key players. This game does have a direct impact on the standing, just like the previous game. I want to go with the Stars, but my gut tells me otherwise. Oilers take this away from the Stars, 3-2 in overtime. Game 56: Stars at Columbus

The Stars seem to do better when I do not follow them. They are now ranked 6th in the west and have 61 points, putting them in a tie with Anaheim. The Stars have gone 11-5-2 since my last post on January 3rd. Needless to say, they have played some good games since I last posted on them. They are also tied in points with the Bluejackets. Three points seperate 5th place and 10th place. Wow, now that's close. Vancouver is 5th with 62 points, Edmonton is 9th with 60 points, and Minnesota is 10th with 59 points. Mason has seven shutouts this season and a three game shutout streak to end out 2008. Turco had a five game winning streak at the end of January and one game into February. The Stars are winning with a formula of defense and scoring goals, with a 10 goal game against the NY Rangers. However, it should be noted the Stars are 1-2 in their last three and have scored only 4 goals during that time.Forecast: I like the Stars in this one. Why? It's sickening with how the Cowboys played yesterday. Sickening. And the Bears... well, they at least went out with some dignity. If Wade Philips is still the head coach come 2009, well, I will be shocked. And if he is the head coach at the start of the new season, well, something will just be wrong with the world.

The Stars aren't expected to make the playoffs at this point. So, there is no proverbial carrot dangling before them. Stranger things have happened, so I won't count them out until they are mathematically eliminated, but I am not holding my breath, to say the least.

Should Ottawa keep these four on the ice, they would appear to have a really good shot at things. Again, I wonder if fatigue will play in as a factor in this game. To even things out, though, the Senators will be playing at home.

Forecast: Zubov has had a good career. He really has. His absense will be felt... mostly due to respect, it will affect the demeanor of the players. The Senators will be tired, at least a little bit, which will affect how they play. They could grab some energy from a pumped up crowd, but I do question just how pumped up the crowd will be since this is a last place team with little chance to make the playoffs. And Stars are playing better of late. Look for a score of 4-3, Stars.

Forecast: Like I just said above, I think the Stars are just a little bit better. And the Stars at playing in Dallas. So... Stars take this one, 2-0. That's right, a shutout. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

These guys should tear up the Stars. That's just how I feel about it, at least until the Stars roll off five or more in a row.

Phoenix has the better goalie... well, save percentage and GAA is at least better, so there you go. That's still enough for me.

Forecast: Coyotes take this one with a score of 3-2.

Game 27: Stars vs. Coyotes

Dallas is 10-12-4 (10-16, adjusted) and Phoenix is 12-13-2 (12-15, adjusted). I know the Stars have been doing better than usual lately... but I will tell you... I just can't say that they will win. So... uh... don't expect me to say that they will when you get to the forecast.

Game 26: Stars vs. Avalanche

The Stars... the lowly Stars. I just do not know what to make of them. I ails me to write about them, at times. I mean, since I am a die hard Ranger fan (that's the Texas Rangers, not NY), I know how to glossy my eyes over and believe the absolute impossible. The Stars, well, I am not quite there yet.

Colorado comes into this game with a 12-13-0 record. I personally believe their record is artifically high. In other words, they have been lucky to have the 12 wins. Still, they are more than likely to be able to take down the Stars.

The Colorado goalie, Peter Budaj, is better than the Marty Turco, at least in GAA and save percentage... and that intangible is pretty strong. A team is as only good as it's goalie. And the Stars don't have a good one.

Forecast: Stars drop this one to the Avalanche. Bad goalie... BAD! Turco just doesn't have it anymore. Look for a score of 3-2.

Game 25: Stars vs. Oilers

The Stars are starting to put something together. Am I buying into the hype that they are going to do well this season? No. Still, I am a bit surprised at who they have won against... and with that in mind, they then lose to teams that are lowly. Any given time, a team can win. Weird, yet true.

Stars to Watch:
  • Brad Richards: 21 points; 15 assists (0)
  • Mike Ribeiro: 20 points; 17 assists (-4)
  • Loui Eriksson: 20 points; 12 goals (7)
  • Mike Modano: 17 points (-1)
  • Marty Turco: 8-10-4 with a 3.48 GAA and a .874 SV%

With Eriksson having a +7 when he is on the ice, you want to keep him out there as long as possible... wouldn't it be nice to have him out there for 60 minutes? Yeah, it would be cool until he falls over from exhaustion. Here's a good note: Stars have won three of their last four.

Oilers to Watch:

  • Ales Hemsky: 24 points; 17 assists (0)
  • Sheldon Souray: 19 points; 11 assists (6)
  • Shawn Horcoff: 16 points; 10 assists (3)
  • Tom Gilbert: 12 points; 10 assists (2)
  • Dwayne Roloson: 4-4-2 with a 2.82 GAA and a .916 SV%

I'm not sure who will be the Oilers starting goalie. Roloson has started just under half the games... Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers has started 5 games and has done the best between the three goalie tandem.

Well, with sports statistical analysis, you are not supposed to let your personal feelings get in the way of who will win any given game. I tend to do that with the Rangers, actually, I do it a lot with the Texas Rangers... and right now, I am letting my frustration with the Stars cloud my thoughts of who will win. Forecast: I have posted for the last six Stars games, and I am beginning to feel like I am getting this hockey thing down. It doesn't mean I am an expert on hockey, to say the least, but I know enough now to know that I enjoy it. What I didn't say above is that the Oilers have lost three of their last four, with their last game against the Stars. The Stars are playing two days in a row, so they have a fatigue factor. Oilers win this one due to a higher energy level and better players. Score: 3-2.
